Military division sacrificial wine is an official position in the late Han Dynasty. It was created by Cao Cao. It is in the same rank as Gong Cao and Pushe. The difference is that sacrificing wine is a civilian post, similar to modern secretary or confidential staff without real power.  Guo Jia, a famous advisor of Cao Cao, once served as a military counselor to sacrifice wine. Later, due to heavy official duties, this position was widely established to assist in political affairs, such as Taile sacrifice wine, Taichang sacrifice wine and so on.

祭酒古禮祭祀宴饗時,由最年長尊者舉酒以祭於地,故以祭酒為尊稱,同輩之長之義。最早追溯可源與夏商周時代之官品職位役階。戰國時代齊國稷下學宮之長,即為祭酒,荀子曾三次擔任此職務;漢博士之長原稱僕射,東漢改稱「博士祭酒」,秩六百石。
軍師祭酒是漢朝末年的官職,由曹操所創,與功曹、僕射同位階,不同的是祭酒為文職,類似現代秘書或機要這類沒有實權的幕僚職。曹操著名謀士郭嘉就曾經擔任軍師祭酒,後來由於公務繁重而廣設此職以輔助政事,比如太樂祭酒、太常祭酒等等。
